ST PATRICK’S FESTIVAL SET FOR NEW HEIGHTS

After what many believed was the best Festival yet last year, the St Patrick’s team (which includes some new heads amongst the experienced team), is out of the blocks earlier this year and has been busy planning for 2010. ‘We promised last year we were looking to raise the bar and in little time made some excellent progress. With an earlier start this year we are getting very excited about how things are shaping up. The success of last year has drawn a lot more interest from those who wish to be involved and we have been inundated with requests from bands (many from Ireland). We are also already teeing up some fantastic new aspects to the parade (including a whole range of vintage vehicles and steam engines), and we have been approached by all kinds of weird and wonderful looking walking groups. We are meeting with one of our most supportive partners South Birmingham College this week, so we can discuss with them how we can best use their absolutely incredible facilities, auditoriums, stages and sheer indigenous talent to best effect.’

Most of all though the festival as ever is a community event and the St Patricks team want as many involved in the festival or parade as possible in whatever capacity, and would kindly ask you to contact Event Manger Kent Davis to discuss ways of being involved/publicising the event:

IT IS YOUR EVENT- please contact us asap so we can discuss ways to continually improve the festival with your help and/or involvement.

The St Patrick’s team is also encouraging everyone to attend its’ fantastic Christmas party and Disco at the wonderful newly refurbished Irish Centre on Friday 11th December which for £5 will include a delicious curry or Chilli, Cairde performing live and the best dj in town John McMahon. ‘This promises to be a fabulous excellent value for money night out as well as raising funds to make the festival better than ever’.

2009 Programme Listing Available

St Patrick's Birmingham Festival's 2009 Programme Listing can be now be downloaded here (.pdf) or viewed here:

St PatROCKs at the Bradford St. Stage

ST PATROCKS
SUNDAY MARCH 15TH 2PM – 7PM, BRADFORD STREET STAGE

Time to make Bradfrod street BUZZ.

Confirmed acts are:
Brummie Punk Step Maestros - The Scarlet Harlots (whose enormous following could form their own parade). The Scarlets were recent finalists on T4’s Orange unsigned but the huge accolades they are winning hasn’t altered there down to earth attitude.
Parade favourites The Father Teds, who aside from being in constant demand have become something of a Parade day institution. They have fittingly just released a single entitled ‘St Patricks Day’.
Whirling gypsy troubadours The Destroyers. This 15 piece outfit of Conservatoire escapees turned musical brigands have been tearing up stages with barnstorming performances at festivals throughout the land and are due to release their eagerly awaited first album shortly. This is Eastern European folk music with a gothic turbo charge, ignited by banks of brass, fiddles, accordions and drums.
Indie pop outfit THE HEATHERS are now fronted by live wire Rachel and fast building a big following.
Straight out of ‘County Holloway’ in North London pogues/clash combo NECK. Neck inhabit a musical niche rich in traditional Irish tunes but liberally dosed with a strong punk ethic.Firm favourites across the live circuits of the UK, Europe and the good old US of A, Neck drag any crowd into the party with their infectious reels, powerful riffs and fantastic lyrics.

The Bradford street stage will be MC’d by bouncing voxbox Bass6, with Bobby from the simply massive Bigger than Barry djing his favourite Irish tunes.

ARE YOU READY, HERE WE GO!

Festival Gears Up To Best Yet

Green is clearly associated with St Patrick and all things Irish.  But it is also associated with envy, which is what many cities may feel about Birmingham’s’ fantastic event.  However we would never wish to draw comparisons with deadly sins and the most popular patron saint in the universe.   St Patrick is many things to many people and our festival is an opportunity to try and represent that diversity.

As with all events there has to be a start and though many believe it is when the space age exterior of Selfridges turns green, our festivals’ official launch is in fact at The Paragon Hotel on Friday 13th March.  The launch is an opportunity for us to bring together in an informal but salubrious setting many of those who are the heart, soul and fibre of the parade; performers, volunteers, past committee members, sponsors and most importantly individuals from the community.

For many however the unofficial launch is with the first public performances which take place on Saturday 14th March in the Bullring and also on the 3rd floor of Selfridges.  Essentially it is a condensed showcase of what is to come: marching bands, dancers, traditional and contemporary musicians and some exotic twists.  It is however a calm before the storm.

Sunday 15th march – parade day- starts for some in a sincerely religious manner with a traditional mass.  Parade does not discriminate however and many of our more secular supporters take alternative spiritual fulfilment in many of the local hostelries.  At MIDDAY: STORM BREAKS.

The 2009 parade promises all the thrill of previous years – with a marathon procession of marching bands, floats, walking groups, dancers, convoys, idiosyncrasies  and an epic (possibly record breaking) gathering of vintage Ferguson tractors organised by parade legend Willie Finnegan.  If the walls of Jericho happened to find themselves in Birmingham for the day – they would surely crumble to dust.  As the parade finishes we are considering (as we go to press), to organise a mass singing of Molly Malone (who knows a grand slam or triple crown may be in the bag by then) – we’ll see.

UNLIKE PREVIOUS YEARS HOWEVER WHEN THE PARADE IS OVER THE ENTERTAINMENT HAS FAR FROM FINISHED.  Take a wander over to the Emerald Village which for the first time is situated at the CUSTARD FACTORY on Gibb st  (between South Birmingham College and the Old Crown).  Be amazed by the array of FAMILY entertainment we have organised – from graffiti battles to World champion freestyle footballers. Or for those that like their fun a little louder and larger check out ST PatROCKS - the outdoor stage on Bradford st (behind the Irish Centre) which will feature blistering performances from the likes of The Destroyers, Scarlet Harlots and Neck .  Of course most of the local pubs will also be the source of great Craic and many have their own unique interpretation of how to Irish things up a little.  South Birmingham College will be as popular a destination as any on parade day, providing as ever a warm and welcoming atmosphere for families, adults and youth alike with a really extensive array of eclectic entertainment.

Festival is not over though. Do not miss the exceptional Ultan Cowley show; ‘The Craic was good in Cricklewood’ free of charge at the Irish Club 8pm on Monday 16th March  or the return of spellbinding storyteller Claire Muireann Murphy free of charge at the Paragon 7.30pm on the big day itself Tuesday 17th March.
